Pressestimmen

"The terse, earthy tone and black humor read like hard-boiled fiction." - The Statesman"The book intersperses Morgan's real-life experiences from crime scenes with stories from his childhood in New Orleans in classic Southern gothic style that one author dubbed "Mem-Noir."" -Oxford American"...a great book utilizing traditions in Southern storytelling to appall and amaze. It is contemporary Southern gothic at it’s best." -The NOLA Defender" ... it is easy to imagine Joseph Scott Morgan making a cameo appearance in Faulkner’s 'A Rose for Emily.' Blood Beneath My Feet—a sanguinary, though not at all sanguine work—clearly functions as a 'therapeutic memoir'. With it, Morgan has pumped the old 'open a vein and start writing' axiom into a torrential burst of aortic hemorrhaging; instead of the usual razor, he used the Grim Reaper’s own scythe on himself." — Candice Dyer, Paste Magazine "If you ever had an interest in this profession (forensics), this is a book that will give you the cold, hard, unvarnished truth. Morgan is jaded, and for good reason." You've Gotta Read This (blog)

We seldom learn what makes a man tick. What circumstances causes a man (or woman) to make life’s most altering choices? The author takes us on a journey into the colorful, swampy land of his early years... Louisiana. And walks us smack into the middle of gruesome crime scenes in the tenement housing of New Orleans and Atlanta. His story is compelling. He answers the question, “why would anyone ever want to be a death investigator?” and he reveals why it was imperative that he leave it behind.Blood Beneath My Feet reads as smoothly as any southern crime fiction you’ve ever read. But these tales are true. And the author gives a personal account of each, because he was inserted into each horrific story.

After looking through amazon and trying to find new material to read I stumbled across this book. 1. Reviews were excellent. #2: I was not familiar with this topic.# 3: price was fair. So why not read something new and totally out of my comfort zone. Wow is all I can say. The author actually made me feel as if I was standing next to him. I experienced so many emotions reading this book. I laughed, I cried, I was even heart broken at one point. I just wish there was more to read. I truly hope to see much more from this author!!! Looking forward to many more books!!! You know it's a good book when you finish reading it and you want more. I want to know more about this insane job that Mr. Morgan had!!

If you are reading this review, that means you are considering reading this book, and that gives me an opportunity to tell you the three reasons why I would strongly encourage you to do so. 1) The subject matter is incredibly interesting, and will keep you thinking long after you've read the last page. The author, Morgan, served as a death investigator for decades in very rough, inner city areas of New Orleans and Atlanta. The book details some of Morgan's most disturbing and incredible (truth IS stranger than fiction, folks) cases investigating all manners of death deemed to be something other than due to obvious natural causes. Shootings, stabbings, intricate suicides, autoerotic asphixiations, you name it, Morgan has seen it up close and personal. 2) Morgan's writing style is nothing short of brilliant. The book reads almost poetically in places because the writing is just so darn good. One aspect that I loved was that death features as a character in the book. Indeed, Death is almost like Morgan's unsavory business associate. Where Morgan goes, Death has been lurking around, and Death has almost always left his gruesome calling card for Morgan to find. 3) This is as good a Southern memoir as has been published in recent years. If you liked "All Over but the Shouting" or "The Glass Castle," this book is for you. Morgan grew up in the South, living a hard-scrabble life with an abusive father, yet pursued an education and a career that very few people would have the testicular fortitude to do. Being a bookstore owner, I read a LOT of books over the course of a year. As of today, this is my favorite non-fiction read of 2012. I hope you read it and love it as much as I did.

I was hoping for an "inside" look at solving forensic cases. Instead, this coroner is a really angry guy. He does a lot of ranting. I guess he finally had a huge panic attack and had to quit his profession. The entire book is rage-filled, and the cases are barely skimmed. If you like forensics, don't buy this book. Instead buy Dr. Louis Cataldie's CORONER. Now THAT'S a good book.

Well written, first-person account of a death investigator and how it took its toll on the author. Mr. Morgan details his life experiences before his career of choice took him on a journey that ended in severe post-traumatic stress disorder. He struggles to maintain his "personhood" while dealing with brutal death scenes on a daily basis, informing family members of loved-one's deaths, gripped by the knowledge that their lives will forever be changed, and he describes the grief he experienced after assisting in the autopsies of two friends in a manner that I never would have considered (and hope to never have to endure). To quote him, "Death doesn't care."The book was engrossing and hard to put down. After reading his story and the detailed accounts of harrowing investigations, I can only hope that he continues in his writing career.
